Public Lands Protection

Fully one-fifth of the state of Michigan belongs to the public. These irreplaceable holdings stretch from the wilds of Isle Royale National Park in the remote northwest, to the majestic old-growth of Hartwick Pines State Park in the heart of the state, to the landmark Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge in the urban southeast.

Thanks to generations before us who had the vision to protect the places we need to reconnect with the natural world, we have 96 State Park and Recreation areas and 63 State Wildlife Areas that give us places to camp, fish, hike, and marvel at our state’s natural beauty.

But special interests threaten to despoil these special places by lobbying our lawmakers to allow irresponsible logging, mining, drilling and development. Environment Michigan is committed to defending the public interest by ensuring that our treasured public lands are protected for us and for future generations.
