Environment Michigan Launches Far-Reaching Legislative Agenda

Lansing, MI: Today, as the new Legislature is being sworn in, Environment Michigan is launching an ambitious legislative agenda that, if implemented, would turn Michigan once again into an environmental leader and help reinvigorate our ailing economy.

“This legislative session marks a turning point for Michigan’s environmental future,” said Environment Michigan Director Mike Shriberg.  “Our Legislature has an unprecedented opportunity to move our state toward energy independence, restore our Great Lakes, protect our natural heritage, and eliminate toxic chemicals.”

Voters ranked environmental and energy concerns high during the 2006 election cycle, which led 33 incoming state Legislators to sign a far-reaching “New Energy Future” platform that Environment Michigan drafted.

“The people of Michigan are speaking with a clear voice to demand strong protections for our environment and way of life,” said Environment Michigan Advocate Kim Pargoff.  “The question is whether our newly elected officials will have the political will to break free from the polluting special interests and take strong action for Michigan’s future.”
