Over 80 Candidates Commit to a New Energy Future

Ann Arbor, Mich. – With just 26 days to go till the election over 80 candidates for state office have committed to working towards a new energy future for Michigan.

Environment Michigan has been working to get all candidates signed on to a visionary plan for energy independence in Michigan.  This plan includes:

  • Harnessing homegrown, renewable, clean energy sources by committing to working towards producing at least 25% of Michigan’s electricity through those sources by 2025.
  • Saving energy with high-performance homes and businesses by requiring at least 10% energy use reduction for electricity and home heating by 2025 and also supporting minimum efficiency requirements for key appliances and industrial equipment.
  • Investing in a new energy future by committing at least $5 billion over the next 10 years – including current investments in the 21st Century Jobs Fund and elsewhere – to energy ventures that would catapult Michigan into a national energy leader.

“The response to this vision has been outstanding from both the citizens of Michigan and the candidates for office,” said Abby Rubley, field coordinator for Environment Michigan.  “We will continue to work until Election Day to get all candidates signed on and committed to moving Michigan towards energy independence.”

In addition to Environment Michigan’s efforts with candidates, the citizen outreach staff is currently talking with residents across to the state and encouraging them to also commit to a new energy future for Michigan.
