Group Says Detroit's Heat is a Problem (new window)

Environment Michigan says Detroit is a hot place to be… and that’s not necessarily a good thing.

The research and public policy group’s new report called “Feeling the Heat” focuses on global warming. Looking at metro Detroit, Environment Michigan says the city’s average temperature increased 1.5 degrees above the historical average last year. Between 2000 and 2007, Detroit’s average temperature has been at least 1.2 degrees above its historical average.

Environment Michigan’s Andy Klitzke says the report shows this is not just a local phenomenon.

“According to NASA the year 2007 tied for the second warmest year on record globally and was the tenth warmest year on record in the United States. In fact, seven of the eight warmest years on record globally have occurred since 2001.”

Klitzke say Environment Michigan is urging the next President of the United States to develop a policy to reduce global warming emissions by 20% by 2020 and by 80% by 2050. The group says the key is a clean energy plan utilizing renewable sources while reducing carbon dioxide creating fossil fuels.
