The most effective tool we have available for long-term land
protections is the Wilderness and Natural Areas Act. This important
piece of legislation gives the DNR the authority to protect up to 10%
of our most treasured public lands. Unfortunately it is extremely
under-utilized. It has been 18 years since the DNR has protected any
land under the Act. Please contact the DNR and let them know that
long-term land protection is a priority of all Michiganders and urge
them to use the Wilderness and Natural Areas Act to the fullest extent.
