Clean Energy

Call today: Tell your representative to stop the Dirty Air Act!

In a matter of days, the Obama administration is planning to announce new Clean Cars standards that will deliver long overdue improvements in gas mileage standards and reductions in carbon pollution.

However, the Dirty Air Act would, among other things, block the new standards. At least 41 senators and 192 representatives have indicated that they'd be willing to back the Dirty Air Act. That’s why, with victory so close at hand, we need you to call your representative today.

Call 202-224-3121 and ask for your representative. When you reach the office, tell them that you are a constituent and that you urge the representative to oppose bills to block President Obama from enforcing the Clean Air Act to fight global warming. (The bills are H.J.Res. 66, 76, and 77 and H.R. 391, 4396, 4572, and 4573.) Once you make your call, please take a moment to report your call in the form at the right.

Thanks for making it all possible.

A major investment in clean energy and green jobs

Environment Michigan worked with our congressional delegation to strengthen President Obama's economic recovery package. Thousands of online activists from Environment Michigan and our allies took action to ask Congress to keep funding for clean energy and green jobs in the final bill. In the end, the president's recovery package included $33 billion for clean energy and $27 billion for energy efficiency. Read more.

Don't let one senator snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

We’re on the verge of a hard-fought victory for clean air and clean energy, but Sen. Lisa Murkowski seems determined to stand in the way.  Last May, President Obama decided to improve the nation’s gas mileage standards and require big cuts in tailpipe emissions of global warming pollution.  Now, with the EPA moving to finalize this new rule by April 1, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski wants to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The Senate could vote within days on her Dirty Air Act, which would, among other things, block the EPA’s new clean car standards.  Sign our petition to the right telling our senators to Vote No on the Murkowski Dirty Air Act!

Stop offshore drilling

The oil spill unfolding on the Louisiana coast is a disaster. Please tell President Obama to pull back his plans for more oil drilling on our nation’s shores in places including Florida, the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and off the Outer Banks.

The oil slick from BP’s rig is now the biggest spill in U.S. history, with as much as 2 million gallons of crude per day threatening to cover sperm whales, brown pelicans, shrimp, fish, and the fragile coast itself. We must not allow more drilling off of our coasts.

Dear President Obama,

In light of the unfolding disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, I am writing to urge you to reverse course on your recent plans to open our coasts to more oil drilling. There are now one million gallons of oil floating off the coast of Louisiana, threatening untold destruction to wildlife and the environment. If we ever needed a reminder that "drill baby drill" is the wrong way to go, we now have it.

And yet, your administration is currently still moving forward with a plan to expand offshore drilling to more than 200 million acres off our nation's shores.

I do not want to see more birds, beaches, and boats covered in oil slicks. I urge you to halt plans to expand drilling, and instead use your power as president to reinstate the moratorium on offshore oil drilling on our coast.

Sincerely,

Hold BP Accountable

The oil spill from BP's drill rig continues to unfold in the Gulf of Mexico, with no end in sight to the damage to wildlife, fishermen and coastal communities. And while the cost of this damage could run as high as $14 billion, a federal law currently caps liability for oil companies like BP at only $75 million.

Every dime of liability that BP -- and Halliburton and Transocean, collectively -- avoid is a dime of damage that is picked up by us, the taxpaying public.

So let's tell Congress -- "not one dime" of taxpayer money to pay for BP's mess.

In light of BP's disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, I am writing to urge you to remove the cap on oil companies' liability for damage from oil spills. Because of the leak from BP's drill rig, we are now seeing pelicans covered in oil, and the lives of fishermen and coastal communities upended. And scientists are now saying that this is just the beginning.

We cannot let companies like BP off the hook. And yet, a cap on liability for oil spills does just that. Every dime of liability avoided by BP is a dime of damage that we, the taxpayers, wind up paying.

Please pass legislation now to remove any cap on oil companies' liability for spills.

Stop new BP oil drilling in Alaska

BP is now just one step away from opening up a new oil rig off the coast of Alaska.

Shockingly, the company whose oil spill in the Gulf just became the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history is on the verge of getting a permit to drill some more -- this time just off the coast of Alaska, near the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Please sign our petition to tell President Obama to stop BP's dangerous Alaska drilling scheme, and all new drilling off our coasts.

Dear President Obama:

I am writing to urge your administration to deny BP a final permit for its Liberty Project to drill for oil off of Alaska's coast. It is simply beyond the pale that the very company that just created the worst environmental disaster in our nation's history would be granted a new permit to drill -- just miles from the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge, no less.

It is time to for you to draw a line in the sand against new oil drilling, and to turn our nation toward clean, renewable energy instead. Rejecting BP's drilling permit and canceling its lease for the "Liberty Project" is a perfect first step to put us on that path. I urge you to take it now.
